First observations of confined fast ions in MAST Upgrade with an upgraded neutron camera

Abstract Spherical tokamaks are key to the successful design of operating scenarios future fusion reactors in areas divertor physics, neutral beam current drive and fast ion physics. MAST Upgrade, which has successfully concluded its first experimental campaign, was specifically designed address role radial gradient distribution driving excitation magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities, such as toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes, fish-bones long-lived mode, thanks two tangential injection systems, one on equatorial plane that is vertically shifted 65 cm above plane. To study dynamics presence well sawteeth neo-classical tearing modes, several diagnostics were upgraded new ones added. Among them, prototype neutron camera (NC) been six, sight-lines. The observations confined behavior with NC a wide range plasma characterized by on-axis and/or off-axis heating different MHD instabilities presented here. this confirm previous results but higher level detail highlight physics unique Upgrade. here improved performance thus becomes elements, combination rich set available for more constrained modeling reactor relevant scenarios.
